Ladies' Second Team - Match against Ashby Castle 3 - 6.12.09.
Despite several date alterations caused by the all too prevalent rain, the second team finally played the Ashby match and thus completed their winter fixtures. Although it kept dry the low, bright sun and strong gusty wind made playing conditions difficult and the match was drawn 4-4, with Harborough just winning on games 37-35. Jane Cottrell & NIcky Winch drew with both pairs, narrowly losing one set 5-7. Jacky Deans & Susan Roberts lost to the first pair, finding the excesssive spin employed by one of Ashby's players extremely difficult to handle in the windy conditions, but played well to take both sets off the second couple despite being 0-3 down in their final set. Ladies' First Team - Matches against Westfields 1 (25.10.09.), Stoney Stanton 1 (31.10.09) & Market Bosworth - 7.11.09. Market Harborough's ladies' first team concluded their scheduled winter league matches with three consecutive victories, winning 7-1 against both Westfields 1 and Stoney Stanton 1. They had a closer match against Market Bosworth on Saturday as they just won 5-3, with Janice Glover & Ruth Lewis winning and losing a tie break to draw 2-2. Lesley Paris & Christine Richardson contributed the vital set as they scored 3-1.
Ladies' Second Team - Match against Leicestershire B - 7.11.09.
The second team had an enjoyable match with hard hitting and volleying, but lost 1-7 to a strong Leicestershire B team. Val Raddon & Nicky Winch lost 0-2 to the first pair, though they were 5-5 in the 2nd set before going down 5-7. However, they took a set off the second couple. Susan Roberts & Liz Rothero were disappointed to lose a set 5-7 in their 0-4 defeat.
Ladies' Second Team - Match against Houghton - 17.10.09.
For once there was no wind and the match against Houghton was played in excellent conditions. The second team defeated Houghton 5-3 with Jane Cottrell & Val Raddon winning all their four sets, with a close 7-5 initial game in both rounds. Susan Roberts & Liz Rothero had some long rallies and won their first set against the second pair 6-4 before going down 1-3. Ladies' Second team - Match against Hamilton - 11.10.09.
On yet another windy afternoon, the second team achieved a very close win over Hamilton on their courts by five sets to three but a level game score of 36-36. Jane Cottrell & Val Raddon had some good rallies and exchanges at the net,and thanks to some excellent drop shots by Jane won all their sets, including a tie break. Joan Barrett & Susan Roberts drew 1-1 with the first pair but lost to the second couple and went down 1-3. Everyone found it difficult to cope in the wind with the variety of spin ably executed by a member of Hamilton's team.
Ladies' Second team - Match against Roundhill - 3.10.09.
Attacking play resulted in an excellent win over
Ladies' Second team - Match against Sileby - 27.9.09.

Match against Rothley 3 - 24th October 2009
We travelled to Rothley on a wet Saturday morning. Jill Storer & Chris Smith beat the second pair 6/2 6/4 and then halved with the 1st pair, taking the first set easily 6/1 but lost the second set 1/6. Marilyn Knibb & Natasha Winch lost to the first pair 2/6 3/6, then lost the first set to the 2nd pair 3/6. However, despite Marilyn taking a tumble in the wet conditions, they fought hard to take the last set 6/1, which gave us a draw 4/4. As with last week's match we just won with a game score of 33/32.

In our last match of the winter league we travelled to Syston on Saturday. Jill Storer & Chris Smith, despite Jill feeling unwell, managed to halve with the 2nd pair 5/7 6/0, but lost to the 1st pair 4/6 1/6. Marilyn Knibb & Jacky Deans, who are proving to be a very good pairing, were unfortunate to lose a tie break to the 1st pair, scoring 2/6 6/7, but easily beat the 2nd pair 6/1 6/1. Match score 3/5, but with a winning game score of 36/34.
